Fatal Notification 2026-09 Transport Related (ATV)

Initial notification is that a farmer was found dead under an overturned ATV quad bike.

Key Safety Messages:

  • Drivers of sit-astride ATVs should wear an appropriate helmet.

  • Drivers should be properly and formally trained.

  • The long seat on sit-astride ATVs is to enable “active riding”. It is not for carrying passengers.

  • All ATVs should be well maintained and routinely checked (especially tyre pressures, brakes and throttle).

  • Loads carried should not exceed the recommended weight and should be properly secured.

  • Routes should be properly planned, and if possible, new routes are walked, and hazards are identified, before the route is ridden

  • Under 16s are prohibited from using most adult sized machines.

  • The appropriate gear ratio / 2WD / 4WD should be selected for the terrain being driven.

  • ATVs should be driven appropriately according to the ground conditions.
