Fatal Notification 2026-07 Struck By (Barn Door)

Initial notification is that a farmer suffered fatal injuries after being knocked over by a barn door that was blown in the wind.

Key Safety Messages:

  • Gates, fencing and doors should be safely constructed, properly fitted and well maintained

  • Ensure that mountings, posts, hinges and foundations are robust, stable and able to withstand dynamic forces such as wind and the weight of the door or gate.

  • Fit fall-prevention mechanisms on any upward-opening doors or gates.

  • Ensure that doors and gates are either closed or properly secured on latches so that they cannot move or fall. It may be possible to fit some doors or gates with controlled-closing mechanisms.

  • Periodically inspect doors and gates to detect signs of deterioration. Carry out repairs where needed.

  • Ensure gaps near hinges, posts, or between moving and fixed parts do not create crushing points.

  • Ensure that door and gate latches are livestock and child-resistant where appropriate.

  • Powered gates must be capable
